Ingredients
3 tbsp unsalted butter
½ cup brown sugar
2–3 apples peeled
cored
and sliced (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
1½ cups all-purpose flour
1½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
½ cup unsalted butter softened
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt
¼ cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a round cake pan.
- In a saucepan, melt 3 tbsp of unsalted butter over medium heat and stir in ½ cup brown sugar until combined, then pour into the prepared cake pan.
- Arrange the sliced apples over the caramel mixture in the pan.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In another mixing bowl, cream together ½ cup softened unsalted butter, ½ cup brown sugar, and ¼ cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Mix in the sour cream (or yogurt) and milk until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
- Pour the batter over the apples in the pan and spread evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
